Kid Group Session #13

Well, getting close to winding down. There are three group meetings left. Tonight began the process of beginning closure with the kids and helping them to solidify those gains they have made. Of course, when I asked them informally, who was looking forward to group ending and who was not looking forward to that, only one child said he/she was looking forward to the end. Another, who raised their hand, clarified that it was only because "I have a lot going on these days." The others were uniform in that they enjoyed coming, found they were practicing working on social skills, and knowing what to say to make friends.

Four group members had LUNCH Point certificates tonight and wanted to play the Wii together. The others came into the office and we did a group project, showing their web sites to others. I will post a notice once it is completed.

Afterwards, we tried a brand-new restaurant, Chipotle. Everyone found something to eat, even the couple of kids who said they initially did not want anything. We left for the restaurant at 5:40pm, but were pretty much done with dinner by 6:20pm. I asked if there were kids who wished to have fruit for dessert; several raised their hands. We went to Gelsons, where they washed those pieces that required washing. It's interesting how it doesn't really matter what the activity is, focusing on staying in control, decision-making, and staying with the group seem to come up. Some kids asked if they could have coconuts, kiwi, kuquats, and grapefruit (no, to complicated, needs peeling, too large). Despite the fact that we made it clear the fruit was to be consumed after it was purchased, one member wanted to take it home to share. I mention this because we are very clear about the rules and, while sharing is fine, the idea is to make a decision and, in this case, experience the postive consequences (eating it). It was a good exercise and one I'm likely to repeat.

So that's it for this evening. For a couple of kids who became momentarily agitated over needing to use the bathroom, it was nice to see them regain control within a matter of seconds.
