Kid Group Session #1 - The Beginning!

We had a total of seven kids tonight. Four of them were not able to attend because of religious holidays and/or homework. The group members who did come did not know another very well, so the group had fewer established members then had been expected. Despite this, the session went smoothly. Two of the kids did not have as many similarly behaving peers as would have been expected, however with the return of the missing group members, this is expected to result. The kids came into the room and sat in the radio room for about 15 minutes while I explained and interacted with them teaching them each other's names and explaining what we would be doing during the session. They looked at the new website www.lunchgroups.com and were shown where the projects were going to be posted. An initial PowerPoint (actually G. documents presentations) was created where each group member had an opportunity to select a nickname, indicate what they want to earn, and indicate at least one behavior they plan to change.

Several parents ask their kids what happened in group as they picked them up, which is of course natural. Please review the introductory advice about this because our experience is that most children will not only give negative reports, but asking this kind of question right as a child was picked up will establish a pattern where the child begins to complain about the group. We will be doing summaries, such as thus, each session to provide an overview of what occurred and each family member will receive progress notes at least every other session about their individual child's behavior and what occurs during group.

After the group project all the members went out to eat at Baja fresh. We worked on saying please and thank you, ordering effectively, and he being in a healthy manner, within the existing menu choices. One of our rules is that children may have a small and serving of soda, one glass, and then must switch to water for refills rather than continuing to drink soda. Follow the group participants accepted and followed this rule tonight.

some of the kids became engrossed in looking at magazines, which is one of the reasons that they are out there, and had an opportunity to practice putting them down and read focusing their attention on the person speaking.

In general the group went smoothly and everything that was planned for tonight was accomplished. The smaller numbers for first session was notable in that there was less code energy" to the session than is normally the case when we have our typical numbers of 10 and higher. The group members who attended appeared to enjoy the introductory animation and asked when we can make additional animations. They also expressed great interest in learning about our first community activity, which is presently scheduled for the first week in December.

This blog contains a summary of our activities and general information about what occurred in group.
